Best Fish Pokemon Characters of All Time

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
Fish Pokemon often get overlooked in the Pokemon universe but they are some of the cutest, most crazy, cool and insanely clever critters in the whole of the Franchise! Just like in real life, sea dwelling critters seem like they are from a whole different world, a different alien planet. But which fishy Pokémon are good for catching and eating? Which are better suited for battle? And which one should you train as a companion?Let's take a trip under the sea and meet some of the most iconic Pokemon and most inventive Pokemon ever created!

20. Basculin

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
This grumpy looking tin opener-like fish Pokemon is known as the Hostile Pokemon, for reasons other than its grimacing appearance. It is a Water type Pokemon and is known to be incredibly territorial, so much so that you wouldn't even be able to keep two of them in adjacent fish tanks. Hailing from the Unova region and a Generation 5 Pokémon, this critter is extremely protective of its turf and will end up battling your other critters for control over its living space. Even though they are feisty, they aren't quite creatures of combat. Even with decent Speed and Attack values, in battle they perform (in most respects) a little mediocre overall.

19. Qwilfish

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
A sea dwelling Pokémon with a spherical body and a flat, paddle-shaped tail, this Generation 2 dual Water and Poison type Pokemon is known as the Balloon Pokémon for its tendency to puff up when endangered. Hailing from the Johto region, Qwilfish has much in common with the real life Fugu pufferfish, which uses special toxins to defend itself in its natural habitat. Although not a fast swimmer, Qwilfish can cleverly Intimidate its opponent by puffing up and making itself look bigger and more dangerous. Other Pokémon would be smart to avoid contact since its Poison Point ability turns a mere prickle from their spikes into a big health concern. It is often regarded as an inferior Kabutops, which is far from the truth. Qwilfish has great usability in UU and even OU thanks to a nice typing, good offence, nice Speed, and general coolness.

18. Remoraid

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
A Water type Pokémon introduced in Generation 2, it is known as the Jet Pokémon and is one of the most curious and fun Pokemon to watch in the wild. Hailing from the Johto region, Remoraid swim close to the more powerful Mantine while eating their leftovers and the impurities on their skin. Their survival depends on cleaning up the oceans, which is so cool! When threatened these small creatures can also pack a mean punch thanks to their water gun. Even though a pretty basic move, it travels at breakneck speeds and can hit targets up to 300 ft away, hence its name as the Jet Pokemon. It appears as a small, green frog-like fish and can use its abdominal muscles to forcefully expel swallowed water, then shoot down flying prey.

17. Stunfisk

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
This flattened Fish Pokemon from Generation 5 is actually a dual Ground and Electric type, a hardy fish that conceals itself in the mud of the seashore to catch oblivious prey by using its static ability to paralyze them once they’re close enough, hence its name the Trap Pokemon. Even if they’re stepped-on, their hard skin can protect them from damage and it possesses high HP and Sp. Defense in combat, alongside immunity against electric-type moves.

16. Luvdisc

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
Known as the Rendezvous Pokemon, this irresistably adorable little fish critter wins hearts whenever it is seen, for its heart shaped design. Introduced in Generation 3, it is said that couples who run into this creature while out at sea will remain together in bliss for the rest of their lives. This is more likely to happen in the tropics, where Luvdisc are known to congregate close to coral reefs, turning the waters pink!

15. Lanturn

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
A goofy fish dual Water and Electric type Pokemon from Generation 2 that has an amazing ability to illuminate the seas it inhabits, with the lights dangling from its antennae. It is the final form of Chinchou and is known to use its special lights to confuse and blind its prey, making it easier to catch. This little fish isn't quite at home in combat, with not much to offer other than plenty of HP and heightened survivability thanks to either the Water Absorb or Volt Absorb abilities. It may be useful in single-player runs but is possibly not the best pick in competitive settings. It is nicknamed “The Deep-Sea Star.”, due to its ability to light up the oceans and blind prey with an intense burst of light. It is a truly magical creature that would definitely be useful in a powercut. Under the sea.

14. Bruxish

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
This fish is sure to make a statement wherever it goes. Appearing very colourful and a little scary at the same time, its mouth is a little creepy as it possesses the hugest set of super sharp teeth incased in a huge set of lips. A dual Water and Psychic-type Pokemon from Generation 7, it is known as the Gnash Teeth Pokemon and makes the horrible sound of gnashing teeth when using its psychic powers to give its opponents headaches. It may be pretty terrifying and maybe downright annoying but also unique enough to warrant the 14th spot!

13. Whiscash

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
One of the cutest funniest looking fish Pokemon and known as the Whiskers Pokemon from Generation 3, Whiscash is a cute and amiable-looking catfish. However, it is extremely territorial. Just one of these Pokémon will claim a large pond as its exclusive territory. If approached by an invading creature it will thrash about fiercely to ward it off. With its simple colour scheme, Whiscash might be easily overlooked when compared to other watery ocean Pokémon. But its all-around solid stats plus impressive dual Water and Ground typing makes it one of the best companions to take around the Hoenn region, if you are patient enough for it to warm to your advances.

12. Carvanha

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
A dual Water and Dark type fierce and fiesty looking fish pokemon that, in contrast, seeks to share its space with others of its kind instead of keeping everyone away. Loosely based on the real life Piranha, they are known as the Savage Pokemon and hail from the Hoenn region, with teeth strong enough to pierce the hull of most sailing vessels. Despite being so strong and vicious - possessing great Attack even though it isn't fully evolved yet - it is known to be cautious and nervous when on its own and not in a swarm.

11. Lumineon

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
This beautiful Neon Pokémon hails from the Sinnoh region. It is the evolved form of Finneon and although known as the Neon Pokemon, it looks decidedly graceful and subtle in appearance. A Water type Pokemon from Generation 4, it has dark blue scales with silvery light blue edges and dozens of them swimming together swimming in the darkness of the deep sea look like stars shining in the night sky. Can you imagine how beautiful the waters in the Pokemon universe must look with all these beautiful illuminated fish swimming about - not to mention that Lumineon is a fierce competitor to Lanturn over food!

10. Barraskewda

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
A fishlike Pokémon with a long body and tapered head, this menacing sea creature is one of the coolest examples of Galarian fauna. A dual Water and Psychic type fish Pokemon from Generation 8, Barraskewda is known for its blade-sharp body, which it uses to hunt for prey and may be why it is known widely as the Skewer Pokemon. It also translates into battle as having exceptional Speed and great Attack value, although defence-wise it may not last longer than a few hits before going down. We each have our strengths and weaknesses and this fierce critter loves a confrontation!

9. Gorebyss

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
A deceptively cute Pokemon from Generation 3, it looks sweet and harmless in appearance - but don't be fooled by its looks! Known as the South Sea Pokemon, this Water type pink creature is just as dangerous as its other fishy ehem friends and possibly considerably more disturbing. On catching its prey, Gorebyss is known to insert its thin mouth into opponents and sucks out their bodily fluids, leaving the dehydrated form for other Pokémon to consume. This is one femme fatale Pokemon that is elegant, beautiful, yet deadly and pretty powerful in battle.

8. Alomomola

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
Hello there fancy fish! This adorable Pokemon from Generation 5 is known as the Caring Pokemon and has some fierce eyeliner game going on. Alomomola is a Water type healing Pokemon and the membrane enveloping its body has strong healing and soothing capabilities that it can use to help others in need. They are known to float along the open sea and appear to be a combination of a discus fish, an ocean sunfish, and a heart, to represent their healing abilities. Its design is just adorable and who wouldn't want to travel around the Unova region with one of these cuties at their side.

7. Feebas

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle

When caught and cared for, either by giving it Beauty poffins or trading it while holding a Prism Scale, Feebas will evolve into Milotic, one of the most magical and beautiful looking Pokemon in the entire underwater world. It is a Water type Pokémon from Generation 3 found widely throughout the Hoenn region and is an incredibly strong and hardy fish that can thrive even in the most polluted of streams.

6. Goldeen

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
Known as the Goldfish Pokemon and one of those best loved Pokemon to classic gamers, few things are more classic and old school than Goldeen. Back in the first generation of games we didn’t have all these fancy pink fish with psychic powers and ultrasonic speeds, we had goldfish with horns. A Water type Pokemon from Generation 1, Goldeen may not be the strongest fish or most ferocious asset in combat, but its distinctly beautiful looks mean that it still earns new fans today. It is truly unforgettable with regal looking orange and white flowing fins and a unicorn like horn - if you can get unicorns, surely you can get fish unicorns and hybrids of the two, right? Fun fact! Its dorsal and pectoral fins are strongly developed like muscles and it can swim at a speed of five knots.

5. Seaking

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
The evolved form of Goldeen, Seaking is a stronger version of the pretty goldfish Pokemon, with colours reminiscent of a koi fish. Also introduced in Generation 1, these Water type Pokémon are reknowned for how protective they are of their eggs and, like salmon in real life, can usually be found swimming up rivers in the Autumn or Fall to breed. They are known to cleverly carve out nests from underwater boulders using their horn. They originally hail from the Kanto region and enjoy rainy weather and their best strongest moveset is Waterfall & Megahorn. Fish unicorn truly are the superior creature!

4. Wishiwashi

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
Despite not being the strongest Pokémon around, Wishwashi is iconic thanks to its interesting talents and adorable funny appearance and has earned many a feature in our previous lists. Known as the Small Fry Pokémon, Wishiwashi are one of the weakest Pokemon to dwell in the sea, and one of the most vulnerable at the bottom of the food chain. However, they possess a clever trick! When threatened, Wishiwashi will group together to form clever formations, so many Wishiwashi can fight together as one giant beast, called Wishiwashi’s School Form, which makes them incredibly powerful. They do this by secreting a shiny substance from their eyes that signals to other Wishiwashi to join in formation and help in combat.

3. Relicanth

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
An ancient Pokémon species that existed for a hundred million years without ever changing its form. It is known to feed on microscopic organisms, which may be the secret to its prolonged existance, who knows! Known as the Longevity Pokémon, this dual Water and Rock dual type formidable lifeform is known to inhabit the dark depths of the sea. It appears as a mysterious stone golem like fish that is pretty well camoflaged as a rock and its body is cleverly able to withstand the enormous water pressure of the ocean depths. It is said to be based on Coelacanth, a kind of prehistoric fish once thought extinct but rediscovered in 1938 after a live specimen was found in South Africa. Not only does it have a badass design but a pretty cool history too!

2. Eelektross

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
A super cool electric fish from the anime that is known as the EleFish Pokemon, Eelektross is here to spice things up! An Electric type Pokemon from Generation 5, it challenges the misconception that fish Pokemon are weak in battle. Thanks to its Levitate ability, this nightmarish creature spends most of its time in the open air, despite being a water denizen. This also happily makes it immune to ground type moves, which means that, as an Electric-type, it has no weaknesses! Eelektross is a hardy fish creature and is guaranteed to take a good few hits before going down, it can stand its own in combat. It also has some amazing offensive capabilities to make each turn count, it's a fish like creature you will definitely want on your team!

1. Magikarp

Cutest fish Pokemon in battle
Not only the most iconic fish Pokemon, Magikarp is a lot hardier and stronger than people give it credit for.   Even though the Pokédex describes it as 'the most weak and pathetic Pokémon in the world', this OG fish Pokémon can not only successfully thrive in waters all over the world, but is arguably saving its energy to make its incredible transformation in to Gyarados, one of the most formidable and most powerful Pokemon found in the original 151. It has also gained huge popularity for its funny and endearing appearance of an orange carp fish flapping on its side as so many of its fans can identify with its relaxed way of living, it's almost like the Gudetama of Pokemon! Its fame and level of relatability, plus the fact that it is so iconic and transforms in to such a powerful Pokemon creature also is why it ranks number 1 as the best fish Pokemon on this list!
